Brooks Koepka, this year’s U.S. Open winner, was the first to win an Open in Wisconsin hosted at Erin Hills Golf Club. The first time the state of Wisconsin has ever hosted the Major. Our assignment was to catch up with one of the only two-time winners of the U.S. Open and a Wisconsin-native, Andy North. We interviewed him for‘s show, “Golf Live” at his beautiful lake-side cabin.

We set up a three camera interview in his basement which was decked out in University of Wisconsin decor including pieces of the original basketball floor from the Kohl Center, home the Wisconsin Badgers basketball and hockey teams. We had just over an hour to set up for the interview, which is a pretty tight schedule. I started by setting up two Genarays on arms in order to fly them over our subjects. We backlit them with two additional Litepanels and then I used an Arri 650 with diffusion to add some light to our wide shot background. An additional 300 filled in North’s background. The two ISO shots were shot on twin Canon 70-200mm at varied focal lengths. I wanted to keep North’s shot clean, but have some of his shoulder in the shot for the reverse angle of our interviewer.

The interview lasted a little over 20 minutes and they discussed North’s playing career, his championships, his time growing up playing golf in Wisconsin and what it means to have the U.S. Open coming to his home state. After we cut the interview we broke our cameras off and headed outside for a short “walk and talk” down by the lake front. That pretty much wrapped it up for us, so we broke down our lights, handed the footage to our producer and hit the road back down to Chicago!
